Let it snow, let it snow... Finally, after many years and invites, Robi was able to visit his Godmother, Ruth Lieder, in Sun Valley, Idaho. And it was wonderful.
As you can see, the weather didn't disappoint. It was, we were told, the heaviest snowfall since 1968! Here we are at Galena Lodge (left) with Ruthie's beautiful Golden Retriever, Tucy.
Ernest Hemmingway would often retreat to his cabin here (it still stands. Gary Cooper, Clark Gable, Myrna Loy and many other luminaries are a part of Sun Valley history, but that's another story
Arriving in Boise, we caught the shuttle bus for a two-and-a-half hour ride up to Sun Valley -- which is literally next door to Ketchum.

It was wonderful to have so much powder-soft snow -- though we're sure we'd probably be of a slightly different opinion if we actually lived there. The heaviness of the snow and the low visibility kept us from indulging in anything more daring than an outdoor walk on our first day there. The evening, though was a real charmer as we all took a sleigh ride to dinner. By the time we headed home (on the sleigh, of course) the weather had cleared up and the night sky had turned clear as crystal ; the stars had never seemed so clear or so close. This boded well for the next morning when clear skies and sunshine transformed everthing as if by magic.

Yes, we did go cross country skiing, though to look at the picture you might think we were just hamming it up. But, really, we did ski. Really. Although it wasn't Robi's first time (he admits to having taken a few slow, half-hour long tumbles down the slopes in Cyprus), it was his first attempt at cross-country skiing -- and Let's first attempt at any kind of skiing. And we did pretty well.

Sadly, our visit was all too short. Here we are at the Sun Valley Lodge (right) with Ruth, waiting for the shuttle to take us down to Boise and our flight to San Francisco. There was so much more we could have done had we but the time. We hope to return soon -- with the the kids. Then they and Let can learn to skate (yes Robi does know how to ice-skate, just don't ask him to roller-skate), and maybe Robi can finally get the hang of downhill skiing! |
